Benjamin Paz- Coffee Professional, Producer, World Traveler, baleada expert and late 90’s reggeaton connoisseur. I first met Benjamin through a mutual friend, Charlie Habegger, Green Coffee buyer for Blue Bottle and formed a connection based on our mutual respect and approach to coffee. My first year working with Benjamin, I purchased 5 bags and he still gave me the level of attention and respect that he would to a large client which to me, spoke volumes about his character.

It has now been 3 years working with Benjamin, the list of producers has grown to 7 with Benjamin being one of them and this lot called El Brujo which means a “Male Witch” is named after a tree that is rooted in a local folklore. Legend has it, anyone feeling ill can seek treatment from the tree by embracing the tree thus curing that individual from any illness. On the flipside, if you are an evil person, embracing the tree will only bring sickness and despair; so the moral of the story, always be good or El Brujo will get you.

The farm is operated by his partner Elias Meza, who Benjamin met back in San Pedro Sula a few years back when he worked in construction. When the work dried up and opportunities waned, Elias contacted Benjamin for any opportunities that might be available to him and Benjamin, knowing that Elias has prior picking experience decided to purchase some land in La Leona to start cultivating Paranemia.

On their farm, El Brujo is situated at the lowest level of their farm which is around 1,400, the Parenima varietal is a cross hybrid of Timor and Villa Sarchi, it’s well adapted to medium altitudes and is resistant to rust.
