Our partnership with Alma and Evin stems back to 2017 (Alma's first harvest) when our friend Benjamin Paz introduced us to the family. Evin Moreno, a renowned producer in his own right, is part of the larger Moreno family, who are among the very best producers in Honduras– many of which have won titles in the Honduras Cup of Excellence. Cohabitating with the Morenos, El Cedral is a community full of producers in the Municipality of Las Vegas. There, Alma decided to cultivate a unique variety of coffee: Paraneima, a hybridized variety. Resistant to Roya (coffee leaf rust) and nematode infestations, Paraneima is special at the farming level because it's an exceptional replacement to the lower yield, rust-prone coffees such as Bourbon, Caturra or Typica, and on the table, frequently outshines disease resistant varieties, such as Catimor & Lempira. Alma’s trees went into the ground in 2014, and the first cultivation of this began in the previously mentioned 2017: all of which were hand-picked, processed and washed by Evin & Alma at the Moreno Family Wet-Mill. After three years of visiting and getting to know them and their work, it was evident why they yield such consistent quality. Most importantly, it brought Alma, Benjamin, and us together to collaborate! Four years into our relationship to the farm, we are continually pleased with the increasing quality of her harvest. This clean and vibrant cup has sweetness akin to medjool dates, a vibrant citric, even tropical acidity, and a complex herbal finish.
