Jose Rivera is a young coffee producer, exporter and owner of Origin Coffee Lab- Our partners in Peru. We first met Jose back in 2016, here in Chicago while on a visit to a few industry colleagues, there Jose stood. Once we formally introduced ourselves, a connection was made which ultimately ended up in Jose joining Metric helping us manage Roasting and Quality Control. Once his tenure in the city came to an end, Jose and his wife Mariagracia moved back to Peru and shortly thereafter launched his own endeavor- Origin Coffee Lab. Jose is a third generation coffee producer who blends modern practices with ancient Incan tradition, valuing the energetic relationship between themselves and the land. After the passing of his grandfather, Jose inherited El Rejo which is situated in the small village of Alto Ihuamca and is a three hour climb up a serpentine road in the Andean high jungle. Jose’s family are also full time residents of Alto Ihuamca and their farms are nestled next to El Rejo with clusters of old farm houses lined with corrugated steel roofs and adobe brick walls- Jose adapted the existing home on the farmhouse attic to serve as a drying area for parchment. In the years since, Jose has invested in farm renovations along with planting new Bourbon and Geisha seedlings that are now bearing fruit and proving to be quite a delight. We are excited to welcome Jose’s own coffee into the Metric Coffee menu and are proud partners of Origin Coffee Lab for whom we owe all the gratitude in the world for connecting us with some of the very best coffee we’ve ever tasted coming out of Peru.
