Position Summary

The Production Roaster & Green Coffee Logistics position is responsible for managing the successful movement of coffee from green inventory to finished product. This role combines production roasting, green coffee logistics, quality control, inventory management, and production planning to ensure Metric maintains exceptional quality while operating efficiently and proactively.

Working closely with the Green Coffee Buyer, Roasting Team, Sales, and Operations, this individual serves as the primary link between green coffee purchasing and daily production. They are responsible for ensuring green coffee is available when needed, production schedules are executed consistently, inventory remains accurate, and every coffee entering production meets Metric's quality standards.

Beyond daily execution, this position plays an important role in developing systems, improving communication between departments, and building operational processes that support the company's continued growth.

The Production Roaster & Green Coffee Logistics position is responsible for:

  • Production roasting

Essential Responsibilities

Production Roasting

Serve as a primary production roaster responsible for consistently executing Metric's coffee program.

Responsibilities include:

  • Roast production coffees according to established roast profiles and production schedules.
  • Monitor roast development and make profile adjustments as necessary to maintain consistency.
  • Verify roast quality through color tracking, production cupping, and sensory evaluation.
  • Record production data accurately using Cropster and other production software.
  • Identify inconsistencies and work collaboratively to improve roast performance.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of roasting equipment and production areas.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance and calibration of roasting equipment.
  • Support continuous improvement of roasting procedures and production efficiency.

Green Coffee Logistics

Coordinate the movement of green coffee from importer warehouses to Metric's production facility while maintaining accurate inventory and minimizing production interruptions.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate weekly and bi-weekly green coffee releases from multiple warehouse locations.
  • Create purchase orders based on production forecasts and inventory requirements.
  • Consolidate warehouse orders when appropriate to improve freight efficiency.
  • Obtain freight quotes and schedule transportation.
  • Prepare Bills of Lading and shipping documentation.
  • Coordinate directly with importers, warehouses, and freight carriers.
  • Monitor incoming shipments and communicate delays or inventory concerns.
  • Maintain accurate records of contracted coffees, inbound shipments, and warehouse inventory.
  • Ensure green coffee availability aligns with production schedules and upcoming launches.

Sample Roasting, Cupping & Green Coffee Evaluation

Support purchasing decisions and quality assurance through systematic sample roasting and coffee evaluation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Roast all incoming green coffee samples.
  • Organize and participate in cupping sessions.
  • Maintain detailed sample records and quality evaluations.
  • Communicate cupping results and purchasing recommendations with the Green Coffee Buyer.
  • Enter contracted coffees into Cropster and maintain accurate status throughout the purchasing process.
  • Track coffees from sample through arrival and production.
  • Maintain standardized classifications and internal coffee documentation.
  • Assist in developing quality standards and evaluation protocols.

Production Planning & Department Coordination

Coordinate production planning to ensure roasting schedules align with inventory availability and customer demand.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop daily and weekly roast schedules.
  • Forecast green coffee usage based on production requirements.
  • Build and maintain roast-to-par inventory systems.
  • Monitor coffee depletion rates and identify upcoming inventory needs.
  • Coordinate recurring planning meetings with Purchasing, Production, Sales, and Operations.
  • Communicate inventory risks and scheduling conflicts before they impact production.
  • Assist with launch planning for new coffees and seasonal transitions.
  • Support production scheduling through accurate forecasting and inventory management.

Inventory Management & Systems Development

Maintain accurate inventory while developing systems that improve operational visibility and planning.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintain accurate green coffee inventory within Roaster Tools and Cropster.
  • Perform recurring physical inventory counts.
  • Investigate and resolve inventory discrepancies.
  • Produce inventory reports for production and leadership teams.
  • Monitor inventory trends and recommend improvements.
  • Develop and document Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to inventory and green coffee management.
  • Improve inventory forecasting and reporting processes.
  • Support wholesale planning through inventory analysis.

Warehouse Operations

Support efficient warehouse operations as they relate to coffee production.

Responsibilities include:

  • Receive and organize incoming green coffee deliveries.
  • Maintain organized green coffee storage.
  • Coordinate movement of coffee between warehouse locations and production.
  • Ensure production materials are stocked and readily available.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe warehouse environment.
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance schedules for roasting equipment.
  • Support production and warehouse teams during periods of increased demand.

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Commercial coffee roasting experience.
  • Strong understanding of specialty coffee quality standards.
  • Experience with cupping and sensory evaluation.
  • Experience with Cropster, Roaster Tools, or similar production software.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Forklift certification or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Ability to safely lift and move 60-pound bags of green coffee.
