Coffee has been part of Guji’s story for centuries. Wild varieties once thrived in its lush forests, used in traditional Oromo practices long before coffee entered the global stage. For many years, Guji coffees were grouped under the Sidama appellation, until the early 2000s when the region earned its own designation—bringing well-deserved recognition to its unique terroir and improving traceability for its producers.
Shonora Coffee, the producer of this lot, carries a legacy that spans more than four decades. Founded in 2018 by siblings Adugna and Morkata Shonora—both engineering graduates—the company honors the vision of their father, Shonora Gata. His journey began in 1988, trading coffee alongside gold, and evolved into establishing both dry and wet mills in the 1990s. After years of dedication, he passed the reins to his children, who continue to work hand-in-hand with over 150 smallholder farmers across Guji.
Grown organically under the canopy of diverse shade trees, these coffees benefit from nutrient-rich soils and natural composting—never chemical fertilizers. The result is a cup that reflects the harmony of its environment: clean, expressive, and unmistakably Guji.
