Cooperative members grow the famed SL-28 and SL-34 varieties in their small coffee gardens – most less than two acres. These varieties are cherished for their intense flavors, deep sweetness, and jam-like presentation. While SL-28 is now grown around the world, this is the quintessential variety of Kenya.
Picked cherries are first fermented for 48 hours. This fermentation step for washed coffee has a long history in the region, leading to the flavors that have become characteristic of this origin. After fermentation, the coffee is washed clean and sun-dried on raised beds ensuring a clean, sweet cup.
Gatagua Cooperative is an outstanding demonstration of why Kenyans consistently receive top scores. In the cup, we taste jam-like dried strawberry, ripe apricot, and sweet limoncello.
