As Head of Coffee Education at Metric, your role will be to up skill and improve the day-to-day coffee service behind our wholesale partner’s bars and Metric cafes. You will work closely with baristas to improve the performance of our ‘focus stores’ as identified by the Sales Lead and Operations Manager. The Head of Education should demonstrate strong communication skills, excellent planning and execution skills, great business performance capabilities, and always have employee development as a vocal focus point in alignment with our operational expectations. You will be stopping in at selected stores throughout the city of Chicago during a ‘development period’ to help identify and troubleshoot coffee-related issues through behind-the-counter training. This will be achieved with staff training, coffee station reorganization, and equipment troubleshooting.

This role internally reports directly to our Sales Lead and Operations Manager and interacts with all department heads of Metric and our sister companies. Externally, this role maintains key relationships and participates at a high level in the maintenance of key accounts and partnerships. This position generally works Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.; however these hours can vary on lighter or heavier production days.


GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS

  • Have a deep knowledge of specialty coffee, mastering customer training for traditional brew methods, espresso techniques, including latte art, and alternative hand-pouring techniques.
  • Conduct routine visits of clients to calibrate coffee, set recipes and perform light preventative maintenance on coffee equipment.
  • Maintain high levels of prospecting activity and the ability to quickly establish credibility and trusted relationships with targets.
  • Track account visits, call frequency and deals pipeline using our CRM system, Monday.
  • Deliver on new business goals by winning new business as well as growing existing key accounts across all regions.
  • Manage all coffee and espresso training programs for team members, new cafes, and wholesale partners as needed.
  • Create, revise and maintain coffee and espresso training materials as needed.
  • Traveling to meet potential wholesale opportunities and structure meetings for potential partnership.
  • Ensure that Metric is represented as a superior quality coffee brand in all distribution channels.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate Metric’s mission and core values.
  • Develop a firm understanding of all Metric’s products and services offered and demonstrate this understanding in the coffee training process.

  • Basic technical aptitude and a desire to learn about various coffee equipment.
  • Help manage and promote espresso and brewing equipment sales.
  • Keep current with and educate potential customers on latest specialty and third-wave coffee trends that are relevant to each channel of business.
  • Be a self-starter and self-manager with respect to creating and maintaining a weekly call tracker, customer funnel, and schedule.
  • Currently be a Lead Barista, or have previously been a lead barista, for a period of at least 3 months.
  • Passionate about speciality coffee and can demonstrate a high level of practical coffee-making skills.
  • Good social skills, able to train/upskill other team members.
  • An understanding of coffee equipment troubleshooting. Must be able to determine issues with equipment and be able to troubleshoot where necessary.
  • Willing and able to travel for educational coffee visits.


JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, kneel, bend, push or pull for virtually the entire shift.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours including overtime, weekends and holidays and participate in on-call rotation.
  • Ability to effectively work in a team environment.
  • Ability to adapt to changing organizational and operational needs.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
