This reserve lot from Gatura, part of the historic Muhito Farmers Cooperative Society in Nyeri, is a reminder of how Kenya earned its place in coffee’s canon. Built on SL28 and SL34—varieties that defined an era—this coffee leans into the classic washed approach that shaped Kenya’s most iconic profiles.
Cherries were hand-picked at peak ripeness, then meticulously hand-sorted before depulping. After a 24-hour fermentation, the parchment was passed through traditional channels to sort by density, followed by a final overnight soak in fresh water. Drying took place on raised beds for 15 days, with constant attention and hand-sorting throughout. It’s the kind of careful, methodical processing that stands the test of time because it works.
The cup hits all the benchmarks of a great Kenyan washed lot: the tang of black cherry, the crisp sweetness of nectarine, and a clear, focused citrus line that keeps the structure lively. It’s bright without being sharp, sweet without being heavy—balanced the way the old guard used to do it.
